Buyer's advice
The rearfacing website has been live since January 2008 and a lot has happened since the site was launched. Back in 2008 there was only one shop selling rear facing group 1 car seats in the UK. Now more and more parents and retailers are aware of the benefits of rear facing car seats. This page is dedicated to helping parents who are in the process of buying a car seat. Below, you will find a list of the suppliers we are aware of. If you know of any other retailers selling rear facing group 1 car seats, let us know and we will add them.
General advice:
- Make sure that the seat fits your car. Buckle crunch, too short belts and insufficient space is not fun to deal with when you have already bought your seat. Also make sure that your car has not got under floor storage compartments if the seat you want has a support leg.
- Make sure that the seat fits the child and the child fits the seat. Check weight limits and weigh your child. Check that your child is not too tall for the seat.
- Never ever place a car seat where there is an airbag! The airbag shoots out at 300 km/h. You do not want your child caught in the way.
- Make sure that the seat has not been damaged. This is extra important if you buy a seat second hand or has it delivered to you in the post. Buying second hand car seats is not recommended, not even if you know the seller, and if you get a seat delivered in the post you have to make sure that it has been packaged properly. Check with the seller before you buy!
The road safety officers in Essex have kindly compiled a Fitting Guide with measurements and detailed information of things to look out for when buying a rear facing car seat. You can download the document here. You can also visit their centre to check if the seat you want will fit in your car or to get help with installing your new seat. You will find their contact details here.
NOTE: If you get a seat that is not installed by a professional, you have to be very very very careful when you install it yourself. 7 out of 10 car seats are fitted incorrectly according to UK statistics, and this is a major reason why children get injured in traffic. We do not want your child to be one of them!
If you would like to be able to buy rear facing seats closer to home, download our leaflet from the home page and take it with you to your local shop. Let them know that you want a rear facing seat and see what consumer pressure can do.
